Beneficial Insects
Growing native plants in the home garden is one of the best ways to attract beneficial insects.  Native plants can be added to existing garden beds or installed as meadows, buffer strips or even used in a more traditional garden design.  As native plants become more popular they are easier to find in garden stores and are readily available through mail-order catalogs and the internet.

For more information, download the Extension Bulletin E- 2973 Attracting Beneficial Insects with Native Flowering Plants.  This 2007 color bulletin provides a plant list and information on establishing native plants.  Be sure to visit the Enhancing Beneficial Insects with Native Plants web site www.ipm.msu.edu/plants/home.htm.

If our staff is unable to offer a complete diagnostic analysis, a live sample may be sent to the Michigan State University Center for Integrated Plant Systems (CIPS) for a fee. This may be done through our office or directly with the lab. For more information on the services offered by CIPS, visit their website at www.pestid.msu.edu or call our office.

Master Gardener Course
Master Gardener Program

Ottawa County MSU Extension is now accepting applications for the 2010 Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV) program. Program classes will be held each Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. beginning January 6, 2010 through March 31, 2010. All MGV classes are held at the Ottawa County Fillmore Complex, 12220 Fillmore, West Olive.

Participants in the popular program learn basic horticultural principles and environmentally sound gardening practices.  Master Gardener Trainees in turn provide a minimum of 40 hours of volunteer service to their community providing home gardening information through a variety of venues and performing other gardening-related services throughout the area.

An interest in plants, a personal commitment to volunteerism, and an enthusiasm for sharing knowledge with others are the only prerequisites for application to the program.  To learn more about the program requirements click on the following link and read the information packet.
